For example, there is no FIR for defamation, but there is an FIR for theft. Usually, offences which are less serious in nature are non cognizable. Here's how you can file an FIR in India:
Visit the Police Station: Go to the police station in the jurisdiction area where the offence was committed.
Provide Information: Explain the incident to the duty officer, providing as much detail as possible, including the date, time, location, and description of the event, as well as any evidence or witnesses (people who saw the offence being committed).
Writing the FIR: The officer will write down the information provided. Ensure that all details are accurately recorded. You can also submit a written complaint, which the officer will use to draft the FIR. For this, simply write all the details of the incident along with any relevant information on a sheet of paper and give it to the officer in police station.

Read and Sign: Carefully read the FIR once it is written. Make sure all the information is correct. Sign the FIR after verifying the details.
Receive a Copy: The police are required to provide you with a copy of the FIR free of charge. Keep this copy for your records and any future legal actions.
Follow-Up: Follow up with the police for updates on the investigation and ensure that they take necessary actions.
If the police refuse to file an FIR, you can:
- Approach the Superintendent of Police (SP) or Commissioner of Police of your area.
- File a complaint with the Judicial Magistrate under Section 156(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
